Great City Mississippi Foundation is working with other city, county, state, and non profit leaders strategically reduce blighted properties in the city through a Blight Elimination Task Force. The group is in the early stages of forming a strategic plan that prioritizes dilapidated properties in high population neighborhoods and commercial centers. The goal of the Blight Elimination Task Force is to create safe and healthy neighborhoods that boost quality of life for citizens.
Part of the project is building a better database that quantifies blighted property characteristics:
Quantity: Number of Abandoned and Blighted Properties
Ownership: Private or Public (State, County, and City Owned)
Location: Active Commercial Corridor, Residential Neighborhoods, and Youth Areas
Intervention: Adaptive Reuse or Demolition Opportunities
Conditions: Arson Damage, Squatting, Drug Activity
Adaptation: Opportunities to transform into a public space or sell to adjacent landowner at a subsidized rate to maintain.
