Southeastern Tech & Research

The Southeastern United States is a global leader in technological advancement and Mississippi is set to become a technology hub in our region. Today, there is more supercomputing power between Mississippi and Tennessee than the rest of the country. The supercomputers at ERDC in Vicksburg, Stennis Space Center in Kiln, and MSU in Starkville are leading the computation race behind the Oak Ridge supercomputer outside of Knoxville and the new xAI supercomputer in Memphis, Tennessee.

“High performance computing is becoming prevalent in nearly every aspect of our lives. Supercomputers are becoming more mainstream, and we are seeing greater adoption of them. These tools are all about making life better for all of us.” Trey Breckenridge, director of high performance computing at Mississippi State University.

Several reasons for more tech investment in our region include the state’s geography, cost of energy, and miles of untapped dark fiber. The combination of new supercomputing systems, data centers, and abundance of fiber highways puts Mississippi at the center of the global technology boom. The Great City Mississippi Foundation is working with government and community leaders to make our city and region a great place to live and work on these technology projects.

Amazon Web Services recently announced a $10 billion investment in two data centers within Madison County which will open up new digital opportunities and many tech employment opportunities for Mississippians.

Mississippi State is currently constructing a new data center at the Thad Cochran Research, Technology and Economic Development Park. The $45 million building will further expand the university’s nationally recognized capabilities in high performance computing.
